Klaus

Clever Klaus! This diminutive turned full given name is all over United States pop culture, but he is yet to break into the top 1000 for baby name usage.

Klaus is a German short form of Nicholas or Niklaus and means “people of victory.” Before we go anywhere else, what an exceptional meaning! I absolutely adore variations of Nicholas for this reason.

Klaus is pronounced KlOWS. He has usage in Germany, Austria, and France but is not currently popular in those countries. He has never ranked in the top 1000 in the US and has such potential for a fresh take on Nick and Nicholas.

In recent years, we have seen Klaus featured in a number of pop culture books and TV shows such as The Vampire Diaries, A Series of Unfortunate Events, The Umbrella Academy, and he is used for an Animal Crossing character. Most recently, Klaus was the title of a very well received Netflix Christmas film.

Which brings us to the Santa Claus issue. Is Klaus too tied to our favorite jolly old Saint Nick be usable for a modern child? He might be for some, but not for others. I think with these recent pop culture usages, Klaus is ready for a revival.
